Catching a cold can dampen your spirits and make you feel utterly miserable. For older adults, it can become a major health concern, as it can lead to serious complications. It can be impossible to avoid the cold or flu virus when everyone around you is coming down with it. The good news is that there are several simple ways to not catch a cold, ways that range from prevention to lifestyle choices that make you less susceptible to catching the a cold or the flu bug. Prevention Works Best

Normal aging impacts the immune system, making older adults susceptible to infections including the flu virus and the common cold. Although there is no vaccine available for the common cold, you can lower your chances of getting the flu by getting vaccinated. The regular flu vaccine or the higher dose flu vaccine, although not foolproof, can help protect you from the flu virus.

Avoid Crowded Places

Even though you can come down with the flu and the common cold at anytime during the year, the winter months are considered to be the core flu season. During this period; being around people who already have the flu or have a cold can increase the chances of you getting it from them. This is mainly as coughing and sneezing carry the germs from one person to the other. Since holding your breath each time you come in contact with someone down with the flu or cold is not a feasible option, put some distance between you and a person down with a cold, each time you find yourself in an enclosed place with an infected person, such as the elevator, in the metro or on an airplane. If you can, then it’s best to avoid crowded places, during peak flu season.

Wash Your Hands Frequently

You can inadvertently catch a cold or the flu by everyday actions such as shaking hands with someone who has a cold, opening the door using the doorknob or simply by sitting down and resting you hand on a place where a person with a cold has done the same, like, for example, a park bench. Once on your hand, the flu virus can survive for as long as three hours. You can then get infected by the virus by touching your eyes or nose with your germ-ridden hand. To keep this from happening, wash your hands as often as possible.

Make Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Drink plenty of fluids during the day to stay hydrated. Natural fruit juices that are rich in vitamin C, such as orange juice, may offer a degree of protection from the common cold virus. Ensure that you get adequate sleep, as being sleep deprived can lower your immune system, making you prone to infections.
